Release Day Teaser!

Today is the official release day for my male/male contemporary novel Love Like Vampires! So today, I’m sharing an exclusive excerpt here. You can get your copy of the book in ebook or paperback from Dreamspinner Press.

“You’re off in the ozone somewhere.” Bryan took a deep breath. “High?”

“Don’t start,” Thaniel growled. He caught himself before he explained that he’d been stressed about Shane bugging him, among other things. He didn’t owe Bryan any explanations. He was a big boy. If he wanted to smoke a bowl, it was no one else’s business.

“I’m not starting,” Bryan said.

“Yeah. Good.” Thaniel leaned over to pick up the bowl from the floor where he’d dropped it and almost fell off the couch. “Fuck! Anyway, you want some?”

“No thanks.” Bryan stood. “I’m going to go change. I have grease and smells all over me. Let me know when Shane shows up.”

He went into the tiny room where he slept. Allegedly it was the apartment’s second bedroom, but Thaniel’s mom’s walk-in closet was bigger. Thaniel thought about throwing the bowl at Bryan’s door. Fucking judgmental prick. He smokes enough shit himself, he doesn’t have any right to start on me. It’s fucking weed. It isn’t drugs.

He only smoked the shit to relax. Plenty of people did. His brain went off on a rant about people who thought they were better than him and who judged shit they didn’t understand. The usual thing.

Yeah. Paranoia. In reality, he knew damn well the guys didn’t care if he smoked. They got on his case about it to make sure he didn’t overdo it, but a bowl every couple of days wasn’t too much. He played high sometimes, but who could manage stage fright without some help? None of them bugged him a lot, and it didn’t bother him when they did. It was kind of nice to know they gave a shit.

That didn’t stop him from sometimes thinking how much he wished people would leave him the fuck alone and let him live his life.

Shane walked through the door, interrupting Thaniel before he could hit major rage point. That was probably a good thing. Riding half an hour with Shane and Bryan would be enough of a pain in the ass without wanting to kill someone.

“You okay?” Shane stopped right inside the door.

“Yeah. Dandy. Close the door before all the frigging roaches come in from across the hall.” Thaniel leaned back and closed his eyes. The door clicked, and he took a deep breath. “You get my text?”

“Yeah. I called two of the three.”

Thaniel waited a few seconds, but Shane didn’t go on. Impatiently, he opened his eyes and glared at his friend. “And?”

“Didn’t get to talk to either of them. Their receptionists wouldn’t put me through.” Shane sat in the armchair and his shoulders sagged. “Guess we aren’t on the approved caller lists. One of them let me leave a voicemail, though, so maybe we’ll hear back.”

“I hope you’ll have better luck with the third one.” That kicked-puppy look got Thaniel every time. He couldn’t let Shane feel like shit for something that wasn’t his fault. “You tried, man. That’s all you can do.”

“Maybe they just hadn’t had a chance to mention our name to the receptionists or something.” Shane shrugged. “Who the fuck knows? It isn’t worth worrying about. I can’t exactly walk into the offices and demand that they talk to us.”

“Why not?” The mental image of Shane being all intimidating and shit was fucking hilarious, and Thaniel started laughing so hard he almost fell off the couch again. “You could tell them you’ll turn them into vampires if they don’t let you talk,” he choked out. “Big bad vampire boy.”

Shane chuckled. “Shut up, dude.”

“Hey, Mr. Manager, you’d better listen to my friends and me or you’ll be eternally undead!” Thaniel laughed even harder. “I vant to suck your money!”

“What the fuck?” Bryan’s door slowly swung open, and Bryan stared out with his arms folded. “Okay. You guys are nuts.”

“Could be, but we’re musicians. It goes with the territory.” Shane grinned. “Never mind. We have to go. Jace called, said his sister’s coming over tonight with her baby and his parents want us out of there at a ‘reasonable time.’” He made air quotes. “Meaning before the baby’s bedtime. Nine or so. Maybe ten if we beg.”

“I thought his family didn’t believe in bedtimes and shit.” Thaniel giggled. “They’re all crunchy granola, let the kids do what they want.”

“Jace’s parents are. His sister rebelled by being strict.” Shane stood. “Come on. Quit with the maniacal laughter and let’s get out of here.”

Making Music

This is release week for my male/male contemporary novel Love Like Vampires, and as usual when I have a new release, I’m excited!

This book is a bit different from most of the things I’ve written. The main characters, Shane and Thaniel, are only in their early twenties, living as roommates with a third member of the band they started in middle school. I’ve written one other story with a professional musician as a main character, but this is my first full-length novel featuring a band.

I got to “know” Shane and Thaniel really well as I wrote their story. All their fears and insecurities, including the ones they hide from each other. All their dreams, and the worries about what they’d do if their dreams don’t come true.

At the core of the story is how Shane and Thaniel feel about each other. They’ve been best friends since elementary school. Because of a crappy home life, Shane practically grew up at Thaniel’s house, and his childhood crush on his friend grew to full-blown love by high school. Something he never dared to tell Thaniel, because he believed Thaniel was straight. But because of that love, Shane has done everything he can to make sure their band, Love Like Vampires, makes it in the business.

Although Thaniel has hidden the truth about his sexuality from Shane, he is bisexual, and his feelings for Shane are just as strong as Shane’s for him. Knowing what Shane went through as a kid, Thaniel is protective of him, and is determined that the band will make it because he wants to make Shane proud.

When they finally admit their feelings for each other, there’s no question of where their relationship will go. But where the band will go–or if it will go on at all–is far from settled.

I hope readers enjoy Shane and Thaniel as much as I have. You can get your copy of Love Like Vampires in paperback or ebook from Dreamspinner Press.

Spotlight on Raven McAllan

And our second Breathless Press author of today is Raven McAllan. Welcome!

Take one virginal widow, add Molly Simpkins School of Seduction and one obliging gentleman, and what do you get? Scandal avoided and a virgin no more?

Molly Simpkins’ School for Seduction has helped many ladies of the ton to achieve their hearts desires, so helping Lady Jane Nicholby ought to be easy.

However, this young widow’s deep, dark secret means she can never remarry for fear of the scandal it would cause. Widows are not supposed to be virgins, after all.

Fortunately, Molly knows just the person to help her change this state of affairs. Persuading Luke De Freitas to fall in with her plans, though, will require all of her considerable skill.

A spot of blackmail should do the trick quite nicely…

Jane let Luke lead her from the sitting room into the bedchamber. The bed itself, an overlarge four poster, seemed to dominate the room and the intricate crisscross of silken ropes and ties were, to her mind, excessive. She liked simple plain lines. Not at all the fashion of the day, but then Jane had never been one to follow fashion. Luke caught her gaze.

“I find it exciting to bind my companion’s hands and perhaps her body,” he said in the same tone he might use to admit he enjoyed a glass of port or a day’s riding to hounds. “Only if she’s willing, of course.” His look was speculative and Jane ignored the dampness between her thighs. The only times she’d ever experience that feeling was with the help of a specially crafted darning mushroom, that had never been near a sock or a hank of wool.

“Of course,” she said in the same tone. “And are they?”

“Well, you tell me.” Luke set one of the ropes swinging. “I’m not a mind reader, mores the pity.”

“I intend to walk before I run, or swing,” Jane said and turned into his arms.

Luke held her close, and she enjoyed the feeling of rightness. “Then a cuddle it is. Do you need—” He gestured to the door leading to the bathing chamber. “Everything is in there.”

The heat of a blush prickled her skin. “Please? Oh, and my nightrail?”

“Not needed. There’s a robe in there for you to wear until you come to bed. I’m going to use the bathing chamber across the hall, and meet you back here. I’m a modern man. I bathe and expect my guests to do so after a day’s hunting. We smell, the dogs smell, and I have no intention of my house smelling as well. Cleanliness is next to godliness, and I need all the help I can get.” He went out of the room whistling, and Jane chuckled as she made use of the facilities.

She eyed the robe that was indeed waiting for her. It was almost transparent. A robe for a lover. Had he really put it there with her in mind? She took a deep breath, wrapped it tightly around her body, and hurried into the bedchamber. To her relief, she was there before Luke and scrambled into bed, still wearing the robe. It might not afford much protection, but the illusion helped her.

Should she stretch out or sit up? Pull the covers up tight around her neck or strive for nonchalance and let them sit looser? Really it was so complicated.

The door opened and her mouth went dry as Luke reentered. Water droplets still clung to his hair, and he ran his hands through it in an effort to dry it. He was dressed in a banyan and as far as she could tell nothing else. The thin material clung to his damp body, and defined every muscle and sinew. It tented over his cock, which even as she stared pushed even more at the material.

Luke saw where she was looking and grinned. “My imagination on seeing you in my bed went into overdrive, and therefore so did my—er…” He gestured downward.

Jane gulped. Really it was way too late to act the prude. She rushed into speech before he could finish his words. “Your ‘er’ is pleased to see me?” she asked.

Luke gave a delighted shout of laughter. “Oh yes, even wrapped up like a mummy you entice and enchant.”

“That’s doing it a bit too brown, Luke,” Jane said, although a thrill of excitement coursed through her at his words. “I’m an overweight, widowed virgin of thirty five, not a young deb.”

“And I thank the lord for that.” Luke pulled the banyan over his head as he stood, seeming unconcerned by his magnificent nudity, before he turned back the covers on one side of the bed. “Except you are not overweight, but a perfect handful for a man to hold and caress. Move over unless you want me to stretch out on top of you? I think that’s missing a step, but I’m game if you are?” His light tone showed her he was kidding.

Or she thought he was. Jane slid further away from him until she hit the edge of the bed.

“Not that far, woman. I want to feel every inch of your beautiful curvy thank the lord non-deb body, not fresh air. I like something warm and womanly to hold on to. Come here.” Luke tugged on the edge of her robe, and pulled her toward him. She met his body with a thump, and his cock waved its greeting. Jane gave a silly, breathy giggle as he began to walk his fingers over the cloth, bunching it up and away from her body as he did so.

His fingers stroked the side of her breast and she squirmed.

“Ticklish?” There was a wicked twinkle in his eyes.

“Yes, no… argh you…” Jane did her best to inch away, but Luke pinned her arms to her sides and before she understood what he was doing, slipped her gown down them, and somehow had her naked before she could blink.

“How on earth did you do that?” she asked, genuinely interested.

“Practice, and no. I’m not telling you who on. That part of my life is over. I’ve turned over a new leaf. I’m a reformed character.”

“One who is about to deflower a virgin,” Jane reminded him with a smile.

“Only one virgin, and then I’ll stick to an experienced woman,” Luke said.

His words hit her as surely as if he’d used a stick. So she wasn’t what he wanted. Why did it matter so?

Because I want him to want me, only me. The regret she’d had when he offered her carte blanche and she’d refused came back multiplied. Luke’s was the face she imagined, and the body she fantasized over when she pleasured herself. She tried to move away, but he rolled on top of her and pinned her between his legs. His staff rubbed her belly and she felt the wetness that leaked from it. No doubt her quim and channel were as damp.

“Tell me now, Jane; do I stop or do I make you into that experienced woman now? My experienced woman.” His voice was strained. “I swear once I take you I won’t let you go. You’ll be mine however and whatever else happens. God, I’ve wanted you ever since I saw you at Nic’s when we were at Cambridge and oh fuck, say yes, please say yes.” He ground his cock into her belly and then lifted himself so it teased her cunt.

“Yes.” She nipped the first bit of skin she could get to. His ear. It would have to do until she could nip, kiss, and touch the rest of him. He wants me; he wants me, not just anyone, but me. Jane lifted her legs and circled his waist. The movement inched his cock just inside her channel. His sweat-slicked torso rubbed her breasts, and the hairs on his chest tickled her. She tightened her legs, in the hope his cock would move even further into her, but he held back and lifted his head to stare at her. “Yes, and yes.”

“Eh?” Luke looked as astounded as she’d felt at his words.

“Yes, for fuck’s sake, fuck me. And now before I lose my courage.”

Spotlight on Pippa Jay

We kick off Breathless Press day this time around with author Pippa Jay. Welcome!

She can kill with a kiss. But can assassin Tyree also heal one man’s grief, and bring peace to a galaxy threatened by war?

For Tyree of the Su, being an assassin isn’t simply something she was trained for. It’s the sole reason for her existence. A genetically enhanced clone—one of many in Refuge—she’s about to learn her secluded lifestyle, and that of all her kind, is under threat by a race capable of neutralizing their special talents to leave them defenseless.

For Zander D’joren, being a diplomat has not only cost him his appearance, but also the love of his life. Scarred, grieving, he must nonetheless continue in his role as co-delegate to the fearsome Tier-vane or risk a conflict that could only end one way.

Now both of them need to keep each other alive and maintain a perilous deception long enough to renegotiate the treaty with the Tier-vane, or throw their people into a war that could wipe out Terrans and Inc-Su alike. But there’s more at stake than humanity, whether true or modified. Can the love growing between them save them both? Or merely hasten their destruction?

A thrill of excitement shivered down her spine as she backed away a few steps with Zander following. He shrugged off his formal outer robes, and for the first time she could appreciate the broad expanse of his chest, the close-fitting fabric stretched over well-defined muscles. It appeared he hadn’t allowed his physique to slacken, despite leaving the Galactic Commission.

“Are you ready?” she asked.

Zander spread his hands in an open gesture to say that he was.

So why is he just standing there like a defunct Manikin instead of poised to fight?

Tyree took her combat position and Zander matched her, just as the Manikin had done. She’d never fought a human in combat practice before. This should be interesting.

She sprang forward and aimed two rapid punches at his face. Zander evaded both with a speed and grace totally out of proportion to his bulk. Her third he blocked with little effort, and she stepped back to reassess her strategy. But only for an instant.

A quick step forward and she lashed upward with her foot, snapping his head back. Zander staggered but didn’t fall. Her second kick failed as he grabbed her ankle and jerked her off balance. She twisted as she dropped and caught him hard in the knee. Zander collapsed. Both rolled aside, and then jumped up to face each other again.

Not bad.

Tyree bit back a laugh as they exchanged blows, each faster than the last. Zander blocked or evaded most, but not all. His skill almost matched hers, yet his defenses were just a fraction too slow. Each move she made tested his reach, his reflexes and his stamina until she could sense him struggling a little.

Time for the kill.

She floored him with a kick to the chest, the full weight of her augmented density behind it, but as she moved in to finish the fight he dove into her. Tyree landed on her back hard enough to drive the breath from her lungs.

Zander had her pinned to the ground. She bucked but couldn’t shift him. The triumphant smile on his face sent rage blazing through her gut. With hardly a whisper, she Misted out and went through him. Golden warmth filled her for a second before she pulled free. Zander pushed to his feet and spun to meet her, but she cranked up her molecular density and punched him hard in the chest. He collapsed, gasping and coughing. In one fluid movement she sat astride him at full density, and the air whumphed out of his lungs. She pinioned his arms with her hands, her face hovering mere centimeters above his.

As her breathing slowed to normal, a huge grin split her face. She’d made a vow to herself to jump him, and she’d done it. Perhaps it was childish, but it warmed her heart.

“Your…reputation…is well deserved,” he gasped.

“You’re not so bad yourself,” she complimented him. He’d fought well, but perhaps not quite with the determination—and certainly not the desperation—of most opponents she’d faced. “For a human.”

“Thank you. Perhaps we could try this again tomorrow?”

Tyree laughed. As much as he could irritate the hell out of her, he was equally amusing. “If you want to spend most of your morning on the floor…”

He gazed up at her with that easy smile, making no effort to struggle. Most humans, without the influence of her pheromones and the distraction of her naked body writhing above theirs, would not have been so trusting. So compliant. She found herself staring at his mouth. What would it be like to kiss him, without the use of her talents? Would it be as satisfying? As sensual? The warmth of him, the firmness of his body beneath hers, sent heat spiraling through her abdomen.

“Perhaps you could let me up now?” His words jerked her from such musings. What the hell was she thinking?

Teaser Thursday- Last Chance Tattoo (again)

A couple months ago, I shared a snippet from what was then a work-in-progress, a male/male romance novella called Last Chance Tattoo. The novella has since been accepted for publication, and last week I did first round edits on it, so I wanted to share again. Last Chance Tattoo is a follow-up to I Should Tell You, and will release on September 2, 2014 from Loose Id.

The shop was far from the right place to indulge in fantasies, let alone to get himself off. Dorsey had to keep it together. The weather was better than the day before, sunny and windless, so customers might actually show up.

Rad might come back. Anything was possible.

As the thought crossed his mind, the shop door opened. Dorsey hadn’t even noticed anyone approaching. He’d been too tangled in his daydreams and horniness.

Startled, he looked up. The one person he’d hoped to see had just walked through the door. The little jump his heart gave surprised him. “Rad. I wasn’t sure you’d be back.”

Nothing like sounding too eager. Scare the kid off, why don’t you?

Fortunately, Rad didn’t seem to notice the excitement in Dorsey’s tone. “I wasn’t sure I would be either.” He walked over to the counter and leaned on it, on the opposite side from Dorsey. “I’m still not sure I’ll actually get a tattoo, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to come in and talk more about it. Maybe design something?”

“Sure, we can do that.” Dorsey took out a pencil and pad of blank paper from under the counter.

“I…” Rad glanced over his shoulder.

“Is someone following you again?” Dorsey asked. Rad didn’t appear as nervous as the day before, but he was definitely acting as if he were hiding from someone.

“No one was following me yesterday.” Rad sighed. “It’s hard to explain. Basically, the only members of my family who know I’m in town are my grandmother and one of my cousins. The rest… When I left five years ago, they pretty much told me not to come back. Yesterday, I saw one of my brothers across the street. I had to get out of sight before he saw me. Everyone knows—everyone in the family I mean—that Gram kept in touch with me, and they aren’t happy about it. So they would give her a hard time if they find out I’m here.”

Dorsey tensed. Of course Rad’s family would have thrown him out of town. Of course people could be that backwards and assholistic. He would have hoped that nowadays, Rad would have gotten at least some acceptance and tolerance. Especially from his family. Even if they were closed-minded, surely they would have wanted to give the peasants in town the impression that all was well in Morrisland.

“That sucks,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady despite the anger and fear swirling in his brain. The anger made complete sense. Anyone who treated one of their own as crappy as it sounded like Rad’s family treated him deserved anger.

The fear was less rational. Rad’s family might be a bunch of jackasses, but that didn’t mean they would hurt him.

Rad shrugged. “It is what it is, I guess. They’ve always been that way. If you don’t completely fit their expectations, you hear about it. A gay kid who decides to move to Boston and become a drag queen doesn’t fit.”

Dorsey took a moment to register the statement. “You’re a drag queen?”

“Was. For a few months.” Rad paused. “I didn’t do so well at it. It took me over four years to even get a shot at it, and then I kept screwing up. That’s one of the reasons I came back here. The jobs I had barely paid the bills, and I quit them to work at the club. Once I realized I wasn’t going to make it there, I had a choice of taking more money from Gram to make ends meet while I found another job, or coming back here and figuring out what I want to be when I grow up, then giving it another try.”

“Shit happens.” Dorsey didn’t know what else to say. The only things that came to mind were either cliché or sounded like Rad should have expected to fail, and Dorsey didn’t want to make the guy feel any worse than he already did.

“Yeah. It would be nice if it was good stuff for once.” Rad took a long breath and blew it out through pursed lips. “Hiding in here yesterday was a good thing, I think. You’re easy to talk to.”

“I try.” Slightly embarrassed by the compliment, Dorsey picked up the pencil and doodled on the notepad. Nothing specific. Just little marks on the paper so he had something to look at besides Rad.

Rad chuckled. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to say something good about you.”

“No problem. I’m used to it.” Dorsey grinned. “I’m glad you barged in yesterday. You definitely made the day more interesting.”

Embrace Yourself

NOTE: I posted this on my personal Facebook account over the weekend, but since most of my readers don’t know that account exists, I wanted to share it here as well.

Measuring Tape

I’ve read articles lately (one in Cosmo magazine; I think I found the other through a Yahoo link) about women bemoaning their bodies. The Cosmo article was about a woman with tubular breast deformity, a condition where the breast tissue doesn’t develop normally, leaving breasts small and oddly shaped. She had $10,000 reconstructive surgery to get “normal” breasts. The other article was about a woman who had lost a substantial amount of weight and was disgusted by the excess skin she had left on her body; the article detailed her binding of the skin and other lengths she goes to daily to try to hide it.

Um… TMI alert here… The Cosmo article included before and after pics. The before pic…well, that could have been *my* chest. I have the same condition as the author of the article. And the other article, well, those who have known me a long time know that about 10 years ago, I lost over 90 pounds. I still have all the excess skin, because the only way to remove it is surgery that’s considered cosmetic and so isn’t covered by insurance.

I feel sad for the women who wrote those articles. But not for myself. My breasts are MINE. They look the way they’ve always looked. I can’t wear some types of shirts, but that’s no big deal, and (TMI warning again) I haven’t heard any complaints about the things from the people who’ve seen them 😉

The excess skin I have also prevents me from wearing some types of clothes, but I’ve learned to dress accordingly. And that skin is a frigging badge of honor as far as I’m concerned. Do I wish it was gone? Hell yes. But it’s there as proof that I took control of my life and lost the weight that was causing me to be borderline diabetic. I lost the weight that kept me from being able to play with my kids when they were little. I made myself stronger and healthier, and that’s worth more than being able to wear skintight clothes.

Someday, I hope women will accept and embrace the way they look, however that is. Cliche or not, beauty really is NOT only about what you see on the outside. “Sexy” is a state of mind and attitude, not a body type. So be proud of who you are and how you look, because YOUR opinion of yourself is the one that truly matters.

Special Guest Raine Delight

My sincere apologies to Raine. This post was supposed to go live yesterday, and due to a blog glitch, that didn’t happen.

  1. What’s the strangest thing that’s inspired one of your stories?

  1. Tell us about your latest book.

RD: My latest story is a free read I had in an anthology a bunch of us indie published. Moonlight Masquerade is only one of two M/M Stories I wrote and it tells the tale of a man who works long hours, has a secret admirer and just about hates Valentine’s Day. Needless to say the days leading up to Valentine’s Day leave Skylar in a knot.

  1. Is there a plot you’ve always wanted to write but haven’t been able to yet?

RD: I always wanted to do a sweeping fantasy story complete with mages, elves and magic. J Hoping to do that in the future.

Moonlight Masquerade by Raine Delight

Contemporary M/M Short Story

Buy links coming later in the week

Author Note: Moonlight Masquerade was formally in the anthology, On Valentine’s Day

It’s Valentine’s weekend and for Skylar Everclear, it’s a holiday he wishes he could forget.Mysterious roses keep popping up on his doorstep. No idea what is going, a little disturbed by this secret admirer, he tries to forget it all since he just got rid of the latest line of loser boyfriends and just wants to do his job at the local bakery. But when he meets his new neighbor, Marc Douglas, he finds himself drawn to the quiet young man even as he tries to not let his libido take over. But on Valentine’s Day, a mysterious rose again pops up with a note to meet his admirer that night. Will Skylar take a chance that love is right there waiting for him?

Short teaser:

Skylar opened his door and groaned. Another damn rose was lying on his doormat. It made him wary that he had no idea who was doing this but every freaking night this week he either came home to a rose on his porch or opened the door to one. It was enough to feel creeped out now. He looked around, seeing no one, shut the door with a soft click and leaned against the door in despair. It has been three months since he threw out his lover, Saul, after catching him fucking some other guy after one of the numerous block parties the neighborhood held in the summer and autumn months and frankly he didn’t know what to do anymore. All he did was work, sleep and work some more. He always seemed to pick those guys who are bound to break his heart.

“I must have ‘Loser’ tattooed on my forehead the last few years.” Skylar muttered to himself.  “Why can’t I find a nice guy for once? One who won’t lie, cheat or steal and break my heart by telling me I wasn’t good enough for them.” Sighing, Skylar grabbed his backpack, keys and cell phone as he hurried to get ready for work. As a baker in the local bakery, his day started earlier than many others. With Valentine’s around the corner, he was working longer than normal hours. He was in the bakery at four in the morning and not coming home till almost five at night some days. It made for hellish days but he enjoyed what he did. Plus he enjoyed seeing people enjoy his desserts and hey, the paycheck after days like this made a nice chunk of change in his bank account. His mind on what items he needed to get done for the next few days, he opened then shut his door, locked it and made sure to pick up the rose before he stepped all over it, crushing the fragile blooms. As he turned and walked to his car, he wondered who his mysterious admirer was.

Teaser Thursday- Help Around the House

HelpAroundtheHouse_100 (2)

Friday night in her room, changing out of her work clothes into a comfortable denim skirt and a shimmery silver blouse that she hadn’t worn in years, Jodie wondered what on earth she’d been thinking. She shouldn’t have been going out to dinner. She should have been cooking supper in her kitchen and watching TV with her children, like she did almost every night.

Instead, she was in her room dressing like a woman going on a date, while Shari, one of her neighbors, played with the kids in the living room. She couldn’t deny that she needed time to decompress. For the past two days, she’d had to deal with complaints and lectures at work. Gina’s teacher had sent an email saying Gina had been disrupting the class, and Matthew had refused to talk to his mother most of the time. Going out with Todd would give Jodie a much wanted and much needed break, but she still felt guilty about leaving the kids.

Todd should arrive in fifteen minutes. She checked herself in the mirror. Her hair looked fine, brushed and tucked neatly behind her ears, and so did her light green eyeshadow, mascara, and blush. She almost wished she’d find something wrong with one of them, because fixing it would have given her something to do while she waited for the doorbell to ring. If she’d believed herself able to sit still, she would have gone into the living room to spend a few minutes with the kids before she left. As nervous as she was, she was afraid they would notice.

She couldn’t just spend the next fifteen minutes in her bedroom. With a final look at the mirror, not really seeing her reflection, she went out to the living room.

Gina and Matthew sat on the floor with Shari, playing a board game that Royce’s brother and sister-in-law had given Gina for Christmas. Jodie pasted a smile on her face and sat on the couch. “Are you guys having fun?”

“I like this game,” Gina declared. “We should play it all the time.”

“Not all the time,” Matthew grumbled. “I still think it’s girly. Mom, when are you leaving?”

“In a hurry to get rid of me?” Jodie tried to make a joke of it to cover how much her son’s words stung. She hadn’t expected the children to want her to leave.

“No. You’re cramping my style by watching us play.”

Jodie laughed. “Cramping your style, huh? I didn’t think you had a style to cramp.”

He frowned. “I do when I’m trying to win the game.”

The front doorbell rang, and Jodie’s heartbeat sped up. Todd was here. To pick her up for their date.

“I’ll get it.” Matthew stood and hurried over to open the door. He led Todd into the room. “Mom, Todd’s here.”

“I see that,” Jodie replied.

She looked at Todd. He wore a maroon sweater under his unzipped leather jacket, along with gray slacks and shoes that Jodie hadn’t even realized the man owned. She didn’t think she’d ever seen him wear anything on his feet other than boots or sneakers.

Her heart skipped, and something lower down in her body tightened. She’d never seen him look so attractive.

Random Thoughts

It’s too hot to think of a post topic, so I’m just going to let my brain go free. Which could be dangerous.

Hot, sweaty, hard and fast sex can be awesome. But air conditioning is sometimes a good idea.

Cooling System

Why bother judging someone else’s love life, unless they’ve asked you to be part of it? Personally, I think anything between consenting adults is fine and none of my business. And anything in my life is no one else’s business except the people who are involved.

It really sucks to realize someone you considered a friend chose to stab you in the back. Unfortunately, some people are stuck in high school and/or in thinking they get to make the rules for everyone else. Which probably means you’re better off without them as a friend.

I don’t have enough shirts that match my pants and skirts. This must be rectified.

Trying things on can be a good experience or a bad one. Depends on what you’re trying and how warped the fitting room mirror is.

I hope it cools off next week so I can be more coherent.
